January 17, 2023

IPCA is pleased to announce the winner and runner-up for the 2022 Essay Competition.

IPCA is pleased to have hosted its 5th Essay Competition geared towards law students, articled clerks, trainee lawyers and newly qualified lawyers residing in the Caribbean (including any country bordering the Caribbean Sea).

Participants were required to prepare an essay on the following topic: The role of Intellectual Property in Finance.

Awards were USD 2000 for the winner and USD 1000 for the runner up, which this year were secured by Nathalia Chavarria of Costa Rica, and Eunice S. Fernand of Suriname.

With this Essay Competition, IPCA aspires to keep inspiring and attracting attention in the field of Intellectual Property law and to assist with promoting IP rights in the Caribbean.

Winner- Nathalie Chavarria

Nathalia Chavarria is a law student at the University of Costa Rica and a Paralegal at a Law Firm in Costa Rica where she works in various areas including Intellectual Property and Corporate Law. She also has an interest in International Law. Nathalia hopes to keep providing a high-quality service with moral and social responsibility and intends to maintain her academic development in different areas of her career.

Runner-up- Eunice S. Fernand

Eunice S. Fernand has been admitted as a lawyer to the Court of Justice in Suriname since August 24, 2022.

She is active in the field of civil law and since the start of the new session year in October 2022 she’s been working independently as a lawyer, associated with the law firm Semper Una Advocaten.

Eunice believes that lawyers play an indispensable role in society, as they are the access point of the litigants to justice. The more they are aware of the influence of this role, the greater the satisfaction in their work will be.

Eunice is one of the winners of the Suriname Popular Songfestival, which was held in Suriname on December 3, 2022. Her hobbies include photography, reading, writing poetry and short stories.

Congratulations to both winner and runner-up. I found the first essay to be particularly insightful. I appreciated the breakdown of the concepts provided by the author and the clear way in which she explains each concept. The essay is a nice primer to the IP- Financing and how IP can be used to promote growth in business, especially since it is not very long and gets right to the meat of the matter.
